The Artist: Mother Earth
I’d love to claim that I am the artistic designer of my work, but that role is handled with care by Mother Nature. The shapes, the elegance and especially the color! is beyond anything I could conjure.
With the utmost reverence, I instead gather Mother’s creations and attempt to immortalize them. Stones, shells and river plants are gathered from the rocky banks and cool waters of the Guadalupe. Wildflowers are collected from Central Texas fields and roadsides where they grow heartily without any human intervention. When wildflower season ends neighbors share blossoms from their carefully tended gardens. And finally, when Winter arrives, petaled color can be found in the blooms offered by local florists. The results are jewelry, home decor and custom products that truly celebrate the essence and delicacy of Nature.
The Crafter: Tonya Welch
By day I am in the industrial software industry – a rather colorless trade. Of the crafts and hobbies I’ve had over the years, none have captured my interest, nor brought more color to my life, than resin crafting. I’ve spent the last 3 years obsessively perfecting my skills, yet I still learn new techniques every day. I’ve experimented with putting powders, paints, flowers, leaves, candy, ribbon, photos, glitter, foil – everything I could think of! – into resin just to observe and learn from the outcome.
When I started working with flowers and other items from nature, I knew I had found my niche. Every morning when I demolded the previous night’s work I felt awe at what had been captured. My thoughts: “Someone would cherish this.”
What started as a hobby has grown into a little shop – purely by accident. I just couldn’t keep it all! I found there was a market for my work online, and then in local shops, so I decided it was time to make this hobby into a small business.
Despite the transition from hobby to business, I am determined to always prioritize the enjoyment and discovery of working with resin, and Mother Nature’s gifts, over any potential revenue. I’ve learned so much about the world around me and how much it deserves more attention than I was previously giving to it.
